Every week in churches across the country, sermons and Bible studies critique the culture: “Look at what the world is doing.” “See how society has drifted.” “Here’s what’s wrong with the secular worldview.” And to be clear—there is value in discernment. Christians should evaluate cultural messages through Scripture. We should understand the difference between biblical truth and cultural lies.  But somewhere along the way, something went wrong. We started to believe that critiquing culture is the same thing as discipling people.  We assumed that if we point out what’s wrong with society, we have somehow prepared Christians to live in it. But we haven’t. And it shows. We now have a generation of believers who are theologically “right” but spiritually fragile—bold in the pews, anxious everywhere else. They can diagnose secular values but collapse when they encounter them firsthand. They know what the world is doing wrong, yet they have no idea how to interact with real people ...

How Cultural Critique Without Cultural Engagement Harms the Next Generation Many churches today see themselves as a voice of truth in a rapidly shifting culture. They preach biblical conviction, call out moral confusion, and warn of cultural drift. These warnings are often necessary. They spring from a genuine desire to guard the faith and shepherd families well. But something unhealthy can grow in the shadow of that good intention. A church that constantly critiques the culture—but never teaches people how to interact with it—unintentionally creates a bubble. A sealed environment. A world where everyone knows what’s wrong with “the culture out there,” yet almost no one knows how to interact in a healthy way within it.  And the children raised in that bubble often become young adults profoundly unprepared for the real world they eventually must enter.
